What is Optical Communication?
Optical communication is a method of transmitting information by sending pulses of light—typically infrared or visible—through an optical fiber. The light acts as a carrier wave that is modulated to encode data, allowing transmission of voice, video, and telemetry over both short and long distances. This technology is preferred over electrical cabling for its high bandwidth, long-distance capability, and immunity to electromagnetic interference .
Working Principle
The core principle behind fiber optic communication is total internal reflection. Light entering the fiber core is reflected entirely within the core due to the difference in refractive indices between the core and the surrounding cladding. This ensures minimal signal loss as the light travels through the fiber. The process involves:
- Conversion of electrical signals to optical signals using a light source such as a laser diode (LD) or LED.
- Transmission of light pulses through the fiber core, guided by total internal reflection.
- Reception and conversion of light back into electrical signals using a photodetector.
- Amplification and decoding of the signal for digital or analog output .
Fiber Optic Cable Structure
Fiber optic cables consist of three main layers:
- Core: The central, transparent medium (glass or plastic) that carries light. Core diameters vary from 5 µm to 100 µm depending on the fiber type .
- Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index to maintain total internal reflection .
- Coating/Buffer: Protective layers that prevent physical damage, moisture ingress, and excessive bending. Some cables include strengthening fibers like Kevlar for added durability .
Types of Fiber Optic Cables
- Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Small core (~9 µm) that supports a single light mode, ideal for long-distance, high-speed transmission.
- Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF): Larger core (50–100 µm) that supports multiple light modes, suitable for shorter distances and local networks .

- Low signal loss: Light signals maintain integrity over kilometers without significant degradation.
- Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Unlike copper cables, fiber optics are unaffected by electrical noise.
