1. Cable Attenuation
Cable attenuation represents the intrinsic loss of the fiber due to absorption, scattering, and dispersion. It is calculated as: Cable Attenuation (dB) = Maximum Cable Attenuation Coefficient (dB/km) × Fiber Length (km)
- Maximum Cable Attenuation Coefficient is specified by standards such as TIA/EIA-568 and depends on fiber type and wavelength.
- Fiber Length is the total length of the optical fiber in kilometers .
2. Connector Loss
Connector loss accounts for extrinsic losses at fiber interfaces: Connector Loss (dB) = Number of Connector Pairs × Connector Loss Allowance (dB)
- Each connector introduces a small loss, typically ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 dB per connector, depending on quality and type .
3. Splice Loss
Splice loss occurs at fiber joints and is calculated as: Splice Loss (dB) = Number of Splices × Splice Loss Allowance (dB)
- Typical fusion splice loss is around 0.1 dB per splice, while mechanical splices may have higher losses .
Practical Example
For a single-mode fiber of 10 km with 2 connector pairs and 1 splice, assuming:
- Cable attenuation coefficient = 0.5 dB/km
- Connector loss allowance = 0.3 dB per connector
- Splice loss allowance = 0.1 dB The total link loss is:
- Cable Attenuation = 0.5 × 10 = 5 dB
- Connector Loss = 2 × 0.3 = 0.6 dB
- Splice Loss = 1 × 0.1 = 0.1 dB Total Link Loss = 5 + 0.6 + 0.1 = 5.7 dB
