Article Overview

Aerial power line optical cables are fiber optic cables installed on overhead power lines to provide communication links while coexisting with high-voltage electrical conductors.

Types of Aerial Optical Cables

  1. OPGW (Optical Power Ground Wire): Combines grounding and communication functions. Optical fibers are housed in a sealed metal tube at the cable core, surrounded by steel and aluminum conductors. OPGW is installed at the top of transmission towers, replacing conventional ground wires, and is immune to electrical interference from the power lines .
  2. OPPC (Optical Power Phase Conductor): Integrates optical fibers within the phase conductors themselves. It allows simultaneous power transmission and data communication, with fibers protected from electrical effects .
  3. OPAC (Optical Power Attached Cable) / SkyWrap: A lightweight, all-dielectric fiber optic cable attached to existing conductors. It is helically wrapped around ground or phase wires using specialized equipment, such as the SkyWrap installation system. OPAC is suitable for long spans (>2 km) and tall towers (>200 m), providing additional communication capacity without replacing existing conductors .

Installation Methods

  • Helical Wrapping (SkyWrap): The cable is spirally wrapped around the host conductor using a spinning machine, allowing installation while phase conductors remain live or during single-circuit outages. This method is cost-effective and ideal for difficult terrain or restricted access .

  • Self-Supporting Aerial Cables (ADSS): Completely dielectric cables that can be installed without a messenger wire. Suitable for deployment near high-voltage lines, these cables are lightweight, durable, and can carry fiber counts from 12 to 288 fibers .

  • Lashing or Clipping: Some OPAC cables can be lashed or clipped to existing conductors, though wrapping is generally preferred to minimize stress on fibers .

Design Considerations

  • Fiber Protection: Loose tube designs with extra fiber length prevent stress during wrapping. Jackets are abrasion-resistant and withstand temperature extremes, ice, and outdoor weather .

  • Dielectric Properties: Many aerial optical cables are all-dielectric to avoid electrical conduction and interference, making them safe for installation near high-voltage lines .

  • Splicing and Maintenance: Splicing is typically performed on the ground with protective enclosures on towers or in buildings. Installation and repair should be handled by experienced utility personnel .

Advantages

  • Cost-Effective Deployment: Aerial installation avoids trenching and is faster than underground deployment, especially in rocky or uneven terrain .

  • High-Voltage Compatibility: Designed to operate safely in proximity to live power lines, enabling communication networks without disrupting power transmission .

  • Scalability: OPAC/SkyWrap allows additional fiber capacity to be added to existing lines without major infrastructure changes . Aerial power line optical cables are widely used in utility communications, smart grid applications, and long-distance data transmission, providing a reliable and efficient solution for integrating fiber optics with electrical power infrastructure.
